This is a very short snippet, intended in part so I don't lose this information and to help others.  If you are finding that your $PATH in MacVim does not match your $PATH variable in your shell, which can cause issues with stuff like ctags (e.g. the version that comes with OS X in /usr/bin and a version you may have installed yourself, likely in /usr/local/bin), simply do this:

  1. sudo vi /etc/paths
  2. Move "/usr/local/bin" from the bottom to the top (if you don't use vim, press i to enter insert mode, which lets you edit it more-or-less normally, then press Esc to exit insert mode)
  3. :wq to save

That's it.
